This original composition from Johnny Zhivago, a pioneering synthpunk band that was once scouted by the mighty Mick Ronson from the Spiders From Mars, is an instant classic. With a glam-rock drumbeat and Morricone guitar on top of a wall of distorted, superpowered rock-n-roll, this track is a worthy follow-up to their recent releases, Get It On and Zero, melding glam rock and mega-heavy guitar riffs. This release is full of attitude and low on pretension, hearkening back to the 70s and 80s but still sounding a lot like the future!
The band’s members, Zal Saper (guitars and vocals), K. Scott Malcolm (drums and effects), and Rob Filep (keyboards), followed their own musical pursuits after breaking up, but then came back together after interest was expressed by a music publisher in their back catalogue. This song came together as a result of the audience’s response to glam-rock hits in their live shows, and their love for the dramatic guitars of spaghetti western soundtracks. Johnny Zhivago is sometimes compared to the Damned, early Ultravox, Bowie, and Gary Numan, but the band has their own sound.
With this release, they hope to build on the success of their other recent releases, find a new cohort of fans, and show that the rebellious and exploratory flame of postpunk rock is still burning.

Here is the link to pre-save our new single “Independence Day”! This song is a cover of the classic by Comsat Angels and was a mainstay of our live act! Please pre-save the song in the music service of your choice!

The original tune was a qualified hit for the Comsat Angels, which was a band that never achieved the success they deserved. While the original was a tense, experimental, and restrained masterpiece, it is not currently available on Spotify. Enter Johnny Zhivago, the pioneering synthpunk band that broke up after being scouted by Mick Ronson, then reformed after renewed interest was expressed in their back catalogue. This version is looser, louder, and more raw rock-n-roll, while retaining the exploratory post-punk flavor of the original. Ringing harmonics herald a different, still strange, introduction to a new paradigm, but wall of sound is good description of the latter parts of the song.
